Blind Equalization and Channel Estimation in Coherent Optical Communications Using Variational Autoencoders

We investigate the potential of adaptive blind equalizers based on variational inference for carrier recovery in optical communications. These are a low-complexity approximation maximum likelihood channel estimation. generalize concept autoencoder (VAE) to higher order modulation formats encompassing probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS), ubiquitous communications, oversampling at receiver, and dual-polarization transmission. Besides black-box convolutional neural networks, we propose model-based equalizer linear butterfly filter train coefficients using paradigm. As byproduct, VAE also provides reliable analyze terms performance flexibility over classical additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) with inter-symbol interference (ISI) dispersive channel. show that it can extend application range by outperforming state-of-the-art constant-modulus algorithm (CMA) PCS both fixed but time-varying channels. The evaluation is accompanied hyperparameter analysis.
